Don't try to cheer her up, just let her know you are supportative and there for her and she can talk to you about anything on her mind.
trying to cheer someone up when they feel so down can sometimes look as if you are trying too hard, almost like her sadness is making you uncomfortable and thats why you are trying to make her laugh. For some people humor works, but not in all cases. Just tell her that you are sorry about her friend and talk to her. |

Drop the term emo. Its too fad-like. No-one takes it seriously.
As for your friend, there is really no solid advice, just show her yo're there for her. If you live nearby, think of a fun day out you can do, what are her interests? Show her you really care by knowing her likes and dislikes. |

Isn't "depressed emo" a completely redundant phrase?
As I understand it, the whole point of being "emo" is to be depressed in a melodramatic sort of way. You can't cheer people up via IM, IMO. Call her and talk to her or go visit her in person and spend some time with her, if you live near enough and know her well enough. |
